The use of BGAN to implement a robust tsunami early warning system
A tsunami is a series of waves created when a body of water, such as an ocean, is rapidly displaced probably by an oceanic earthquake. The effects of a tsunami for the population can be devastating due to the immense volumes of water and energy involved. The EU-funded Distant Early Warning System (DEWS) project is currently implementing a reference model for a national and regional warning dissemination system of possible hazards or disasters, especially in the prevention of tsunamis. In DEWS several universities and companies are participating specially coming from Europe and from the three countries of interest Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Thailand. The Department of Communications and Networking of the Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) is a consortium member of the DEWS project working on the development of the communications architecture between the different Emergency Centres, first responders and general public. In this thesis report we present the implementation of a backup satellite communications system between DEWS centres and governmental authorities in order to enable the warning dissemination in case the terrestrial communication structures are disrupted due to the hazard effects. The backup communications structure would employ the BGAN Inmarsat service for the date transmission. BGAN ensures the coverage in almost global earth area and support mobility on its terminals, offering adequate characteristics for an emergency communications system. To that end, we design and describe this communications architecture and discuss its performance in the possible scenarios based on simulations
Ultra-Short Pulse Laser Cleaning of Contaminated Pleistocene Bone: A Comprehensive Study on the Influence of Pulse Duration and Wavelength
The impact of wavelength and pulse duration in laser cleaning of hard blackish contaminants crust from archaeologically significant Pleistocene bone is investigated in this research. The objective is to determine the practical cleaning procedures and identify adequate laser parameters for cleaning archaeological bone from Sima de los Huesos (Spain) based on conservation and restoration perspectives. Bone surface cleaning was performed utilizing two Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers: sub-nanosecond pulsed lasers with emission wavelengths at 355 nm and 1064 nm, respectively, and a Yb:KGW femtosecond pulsed laser with an emission wavelength in the third harmonic at 343 nm. In all experiments, the laser beam scanning mode was applied to measure cleaning efficiency in removing contaminants and degradation products while assessing the underlying substrate surface damage. Several properties, including wavelength-dependent absorption, pulse repetition rate, and thermal properties of the material, are analyzed when evaluating the ability of these lasers to boost the cleaning efficiency of the deteriorated bone surface. Bone surface morphology and composition were studied and compared before and after laser irradiation, using Optical Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (SEM-EDS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) characterization methods. The results indicate that 238-femtosecond UV laser irradiation with 2.37 TWcm−2 is significantly safer and more efficient toward surface contaminant desorption than sub-nanosecond laser irradiation. The results herein presented suggest that these types of fs lasers may be considered for realistic laser conservation of valuable historic and archaeological museum artifacts

Ultrashort pulsed Femtosecond UV laser for selective cleaning of significant Cretaceous flints
This work reports on studies aimed to evaluate the utilization of ultrashort 238 fs (fs) pulsed UV laser emission at 343 nm for eliminating colored crusts and surface deposits on significant Cretaceous flint surfaces, in an attempt to safeguard its aesthetic appearance and archaeological value. The results indicate that fs UV lasers may be an ideal, non-contact tool for selective surface cleaning of sensitive archaeological artefacts, since they enable contaminant desorption while avoiding photothermal damage
[ENG] This paper reports the design and test of an evaluation tool for formative activities in the field of the generic competence "Effective written and oral communication". The agreement of the evaluative results with the standards defined by experts and quality assurance agencies is discussed. The importance of defining evaluation tools that are coherent with the expected learning outcomes relies on the necessity to verify the achievement of the competences defined in Graduate programs. We define the quality criteria for the evaluation of the generic competence and therefore its curriculum structure and the selection of the adequate rubric for evaluation. The results obtained state the importance of the planning, circulation and feedback of the evaluation process, in order to assure the requirements for adequacy, authenticity, transparency, viability and formative character. Finally, some strategies are proposed in order to improve the validity and reliability of these evaluation tools

Dataset of the academic impact of the Camino de Santiago
The present dataset contains two complementary databases to analyse the scientific impact of the Camino de Santiago in the academic literature. On the one hand, we have included a database extracted from Scopus with indexed manuscripts directly related to the Camino de Santiago. On the other hand, we also present a database of international doctoral theses also directly related to the Camino de Santiago.
The dataset includes not only the final processed database but also the raw file from the Scopus search. A process of harmonisation of keywords, keywords+ and institutions has been performed on the original query. The files used to achieve the harmonisation are also included in the dataset. The authors are grateful for the support and funding from the Ministry of Science and Innovation through its networks of excellence HAR2017-90883-REDC and RED2018-102518-T) and the project PID2020118906GB-I00, and from the Junta de Castilla y León - Consejería de Educación (BDNS 425389). Also, this work has been partially funded by the European Social Fund, through the grant of Silvia Díaz de la Fuente's predoctoral contract through the Consejería de Educación de la Junta de Castilla y León
La importancia del juego en los niños
The benefits of play are extensive and well
documented, and include improvements in
executive functioning, language, and math
early skills (numeracy and spatial concepts),
social development, peer relations, physical
development and health, including emotional
health, possibly because it buffers anxiety
and stress.
Extensive studies of animal play lead to
changes at molecular (epigenetic), cellular
(neuronal connectivity), and behavioral levels
(socioemotional and executive functioning
skills).
Children´s playtime is decreasing dangerously
due to several factors: immersion in electronic
media, parents’ long working hours to
provide for their families, increased learning
content at pre-school and an increasing
focus on academic structured activities,
among others. For all these reasons the AAP
recommends that pediatricians encourage
playful learning for parents and infants by
writing a “prescription for play” at every wellchild visit in the first 2 years of life.
celular (conectividad neuronal) y conductual
(habilidades socioemocionales y de
funcionamiento ejecutivo).
disminuyendo peligrosamente debido a
